Original, complete mock up in book-form with the text and pictures in pencil on 15 double-page spreads (plus title-page and front and rear covers). One of the finest illustrators of her talented generation, Cole's books for children tackled controversial or difficult subjects (in this case human reproduction: the attempts by the adults to sugar-coat the subject are disrupted by the children giving them the real low-down). [Together with] two large sheets offering ideas for the endpapers, one hand-coloured. [Togather with] four autograph letters (6pp.) and two greetings cards signed (2pp.). "Here's the revised dummy - I'll await your comments. I think it works pretty well now, there's more `child involvement'! The Americans will love it!" (13 November 1992) Not just the Americans, as it turned out - `Mummy Laid an Egg!' was translated into 73 languages and sold more than 2,000,000 copies. In excellent condition.
