Print on Demand. This book on mobile agent security offers a comprehensive look at the security threats faced by mobile agents and agent platforms, revealing a broad range of threats agents may encounter throughout their journey. The author presents a compelling overview of mobile agent systems within the broader framework of agent technology. The text identifies three main classes of threats—disclosure of information, denial of service, and corruption of information—and discusses these within the context of attacks originating from an agent, agent platform, and from external entities. To address these threats, a rich set of countermeasures are introduced, including software-based fault isolation, signed code, proof-carrying code, and obfuscated code, which empower developers with an array of tools to protect their mobile agents. Ultimately, this book is a valuable resource for designers, developers, and security professionals seeking insight into the security challenges in the mobile agent paradigm, and will provide guidance on designing secure mobile agent systems that can withstand potential threats and attacks. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book.…

A spectrum of differing shades of mobility exists, corresponding to the possible variations of relocating code and state information, including the values of instance variables, the program counter, execution stack, etc. For example, a simple agent written as a Java1 applet [3] has mobility of code through the movement of class files from a web server to a web browser. However, no associated state information is conveyed. In contrast, Aglets developed at ibm Japan, builds upon Java to allow the values of instance variables, but not the program counter or execution stack, to be conveyed along with the code as the agent relocates. For a stronger form of mobility, Sumatra developed at the University of Maryland, allows Java threads to be conveyed along with the agent's code during relocation. The mobile agent systems under discussion in this paper involve the relocation of both code and state information.
