[Juvenilia]. Caldecott Medal winner Lynd Ward's eighth grade manuscript composition book, containing nine essays and stories hand-written by Ward during 1917 to 1918 when he was about 12-13 years old. 8.25" x 10.75. Unpaginated [44pp.] lined sheets brad bound in brown paper wrappers, with upper cover hand decorated in pencil, black, brown and white, with thick brown rules and titled "Written Thoughts" above an illustration of a bearded man dressed in black seated at a desk and writing with a quill pen; typically signed by Ward before or after each piece. Three of the nine pieces are illustrated with color drawings by Ward as well as two color pictures tipped in likely from magazines. The first piece illustrated by Ward is entitled "Autumn." 3pp. It contains two tipped in color illustrations likely supplied from a magazine, and additionally Ward has drawn a series of four autumn leaves in the margin, and signed at the end. His second illustrated story is dated "Oct. 23, 1917" and is entitled "Spook's House." 6pp., signed at the end by Ward, it contains a series of Halloween-themed illustrations including a witch, pumpkin, red apples and trick-or-treaters dressed in white sheets as ghosts and holding yellow pumpkin-like lanterns. The third piece containing illustrations is signed by Ward at the top margin and entitled "Camouflage." It contains five small black and white drawings: a camouflaged helmet, a gun camouflaged with straw, two trucks driving down a road which has a camouflaged canvass along the enemy side, a hollow paper mache horse used for observation and a camouflaged man or soldier. Lynd Kendall Ward (June 26, 1905 - June 28, 1985) was an American artist and novelist, known for his series of wordless novels using wood engraving, and his illustrations for juvenile and adult books. Ward was drawn to art from an early age and decided to become an artist when his first-grade teacher told him that "Ward" spelled backward is "draw". His wordless novels have influenced the development of the graphic novel. He is best-known for his wordless novel Gods' Man and his Caldecott-winning children's story, The Biggest Bear.
