Item description from seller

XVI, 527; VII, 544 Seiten. Beide Bände mit Portrait-Frontispiz in Schwarzweiß unter Hemdchen. 2 volumes (= complete). - With dedication of Lord Houghtons sister one year before her passing: "Presented to Count Münster by Lord Houghtons sister H. E. [Henrietta Eliza] Viscountess Galyway Dec. 1890", on flying endpaper of volume 1. - Richard Monckton Milnes, 1st Baron Houghton, FRS (1809 1885) was an English poet, patron of literature and politician. His easy good nature had the effect that his political career was viewed with not so much seriousness by his contemporaries than it might otherwise have been. But different was his literary standing: Despite his piety, he had apparently an almost unsurpassed collection of erotic literature, a collection known to few in his lifetime, which he bequeathed to the British Library. Lord Houghton, who was applied as a very sensitive boy in his childhood, has been also considered a possible author of The Rodiad, a pornographic poem on the subject of flagellation. However, his chief distinctions were his intensive sense of literary merit in others, and the way he fostered it. He was surrounded by the most brilliant men of his time, who were invited several times to his famous breakfasts. His was applied as a man of influence in society and in moulding public opinion on literary matters. (For more informations compare to the relevant articles in Wikipedia.) - In both volumes portrait-fontispiece of Lord Houghton in black under protective parchment papers. - Green cloth-binding with gilted title on cover and spine. - Binding sligthly rubbed and stained. - Edges slightly bumped. - Edge, inside covers and adjacent pages foxed. - Quires unopened. - Altogether clean, very good copy. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 1990 Gr. 8° (22,5-25 cm). Grüne Orig.-Leinenbände mit goldgeprägten Titeln auf Deckel und Rücken. [Hardcover / fest gebunden].…
