8vo., publisher’s green cloth, lettered in gilt and blind to upper board and spine, with decorative devices in blind to the same; all edges untrimmed; pp. [viii], vii-x, [i]; 2-368, [iv, ads]; with illustrated captioned frontis, and title page in red and black; boards a little pushed at spine tips and rubbed to extremities, else fresh; internally very good, some light spotting to the edges of the text block, and to prelims; endpapers a little browned and offset; three page publisher’s catalogue to rear very roughly opened, with some loss to the outer margin (not affecting text). Fourth UK edition, published in the same year as the first. This copy inscribed by the author to the ffep with a handwritten quote from the novel: “‘It’s a bitter thing when the bird that flutters within has only little wings. All the more should those who are strong protect and comfort them’, Frances Hodgson Burnett, ‘98”.Perhaps best known today for Little Lord Fauntleroy (1886) and The Secret Garden (1911), Frances Eliza Hodgson was born in England, but emigrated to the U.S. with her family in 1865, meaning that the majority of her novels were first published from Tennessee, where she began writing at the age of 19 to help supplement her family’s income, publishing stories in local magazines. By the 1890s she had married and bought a house in England, from which she wrote The Secret Garden. Part romance, part melodrama, the dark, moral tone of A Lady of Quality made it the second highest-selling novel in the U.S. in the year of publication. The plot follows Clorinda, whose mother dies in childbirth leaving her to be raised by her dissolute father alongside her nine siblings, leading her to become a rebellious and somewhat unconventional character. As a young woman arriving into Restoration society, she must choose between a series of suitors, some of whom will test her independence and courage which threaten both her reputation and happiness. “A Lady of Quality is a novel about the invincibility of the human spirit” the publisher Pan Macmillan later wrote of their new edition “.the refusal of a woman to be mild and submissive, the acceptance of all experience, and courage born of adversity.” Such lengthy manuscript notes by Burnett are uncommon thus. …

Founded in January 2023, Fold the Corner specialises in rare, beautiful, and eclectic books, letters and manuscripts from the 18th to 21st centuries. Areas of interest include Philosophy, Literature, Counterculture and Modern First Editions (from 1900 to the present day). I also work closely with the Canadian writer and illustrator Charles van Sandwyk, and carry a constant supply of his books, artworks and etchings, and am one of the few dealers in the UK to do so.

Right of withdrawal
If you are a consumer you can withdraw from the contract in accordance with the following. Consumer means any natural person who is acting for purposes which are outside his trade, business, craft or profession.
Information regarding the right of withdrawal
Statutory right to withdraw
You have the right to withdraw from this contract within 14 days without giving any reason.
The withdrawal period will expire after 14 days from the day on which you acquire, or a third party other than the carrier and indicated by you acquires, physical possession of the last good or the last lot or piece.
To exercise the right of withdrawal, electronically fill in and submit a clear statement on our website, under "My Purchases" in "My Account". We will communicate to you an acknowledgement of receipt of such a withdrawal on a durable medium (e.g. by e-mail) without delay.
To meet the withdrawal deadline, it is sufficient for you to send your communication concerning your exercise of the right of withdrawal before the withdrawal period has expired.
Effects of withdrawal
If you withdraw from this contract, we will reimburse to you all payments received from you, including the costs of delivery (except for the supplementary costs arising if you chose a type of delivery other than the least expensive type of standard delivery offered by us).
We may make a deduction from the reimbursement for loss in value of any goods supplied, if the loss is the result of unnecessary handling by you.
We will make the reimbursement without undue delay, and not later than 14 days after the day on which we are informed about your decision to withdraw from this contract.
We will make the reimbursement using the same means of payment as you used for the initial transaction, unless you have expressly agreed otherwise; in any event, you will not incur any fees as a result of such reimbursement.
We may withhold reimbursement until we have received the goods back, or you have supplied evidence of having sent back the goods, whichever is the earliest.
You shall send back the goods or hand them over to Fold the Corner Books, Milford, United Kingdom, without undue delay and in any event not later than 14 days from the day on which you communicate your withdrawal from this contract to us. The deadline is met if you send back the goods before the period of 14 days has expired. You will have to bear the direct cost of returning the goods. You are only liable for any diminished value of the goods resulting from the handling other than what is necessary to establish the nature, characteristics and functioning of the goods.
Exceptions to the right of withdrawal
The right of withdrawal does not apply to:
- The delivery of newspapers, journals or magazines with the exception of subscription contracts; and
- The supply of digital content which is not supplied on a tangible medium (e.g. on a CD or DVD) if you accepted when you placed your order that we could start to deliver it, and that you could not withdraw once delivery had started.
Shipping terms
SHIPPING AND DELIVERY
We will pack all items carefully for shipping. We will dispatch all items as quickly as possible, but in any case within 7 working days of clearance of payment in full (unless the item is subject to an Export Licence or we notify you otherwise). All items shipped by us will be fully insured. We will advise you of the delivery options and likely cost of shipping at the time of purchase. For lower-value items, we will usually use a tracked or signed for service from the Royal Mail; for higher value, international or urgent items, we will usually use a courier. Please let us know if your order is urgent. Shipping will be at your expense unless agreed otherwise. We charge £10 for UK delivery, and £30 for the rest of Europe. For worldwide shipping, or for goods weighing more than 1kg, we will quote for packing and insurance. Should you wish to make your own arrangements for collection or shipping, please contact us.
