Item description from seller

LUDWIG BAMBERGER (1823-1899). Bamberger was a German-Jewish author, politician and economist. LS. 2pg. December 28, 1896. Berlin. A letter signed L. Bamberger to editor Sigmund Schott. Bamberger wrote in German: Dear Herr Schott! The content of your esteemed letter of the 20th did not surprise me. I have also communicated the same to Baron Barth, and I can repeatedly assure you that not only I, but he as well, decided only with the utmost reluctance to send you the notification, as we did not hide from ourselves the fact that you would be by no means prepared for such a thing. I would not dream of arguing about your objections to my remarks, and I gladly assume that they are well-founded. However, in recent times, I have had several unpleasant experiences with similar attempts to be the connecting link between new collaborators and Die Nation, and therefore I resist any temptation to mend what has once gone wrong. I have not forgotten your request regarding Rodenberg. A short time after I had spoken to you about the matter, I made my inquiry and received the reply that the review of the Gildemeister book had already been assigned. With the wish that the New Year may bring you only pleasant experiences, I remain with my well-known sentiments, Your devoted, L. Bamberger. Die Nation was a weekly magazine to which Bamberger frequently contributed. Julius Rodenberg was the editor of Deutsche Rundschau. The letter has a mailing fold and the remnant of a luggage label at the top of the blank third page.

Store description

Stuart Lutz Historic Documents, Inc. buys and sells historic letters, documents, manuscripts and archives. My specialties include Presidents, Revolutionary War and Civil War figures, Declaration of Independence Signers, famous authors, important business leaders, notable scientists, aviators, notable women and African-Americans, and other "household famous names." I also enjoy handling the letters and archives of ordinary people whose writings have extraordinary or unusual content, such as an eyewitness description of the Pearl Harbor attack. I am a member of all major trade organizations, including the Antiquarian Booksellers Association of America (ABAA), the Professional Autograph Dealers Association (PADA), the Appraisers Association of America, the Manuscript Society and the Ephemera Society. I am located in South Orange, New Jersey, and I travel to many book and manuscript shows every year. I am one of the very few members of the Appraisers Association of America certified to appraise historic documents, manuscripts and letters. I am USPAP qualified to perform appraisals for estate, donation and insurance purposes; please contact me for a confidential discussion of your appraisal needs. I am an author myself, having published The Last Leaf: Voices of History's Last-Known Survivors (Prometheus Books, 2010) that contains 39 interviews with the last survivor of, or final eyewitness to, important historical events. Chapters include interviews with the last three Civil War widows, the final living pitcher to surrender a home run to Babe Ruth, Houdini's last stagehand, and the final American doughboy. Lastly, I can frequently be seen authenticating and appraising on the History Channel hit show Pawn Stars.
