Item description from seller

Fine condition blue cloth boards with gold spine lettering contained in a very good condition color photographic dust jacket. The jacket contains some light rubbing along the edges (see photographs). Includes Acknowledgments; Prologue; Epilogue: "In Closing"; and Glossary. Illustrated with black-and-white photographs. Signed and inscribed by the author with thick black marker on the blank first free front endpaper. "KH601" is the astonishing true account of a veteran CIA covert operations officer who witnessed the rise of global terrorism first hand. It is a fascinating, behind the scenes, riveting book that details some of the most successful operations in the annals of the Agency; stories told, until now, only within the hallowed halls of the CIA. The book races from stories about the CIA supported Contra Program in Central America (including the only photographs ever taken of Director of Central Intelligence (DCI) William Casey's visit to Honduras in 1986), to the newly established Counter-terrorism Center, to the first Iraq War, to the war in Bosnia. KH601 paints a chilling picture of the rise of Al-Qaeda and the events leading up to 9/11, provides a firsthand account of CIA operations inside Afghanistan, and shares details of the worldwide plan to fight terrorism. Enthralling and compelling, KH601 reveals, for the first time, the behind the scenes story surrounding the creation, initially, of the Office of Homeland Security soon after 9/11, the Homeland Security Council, and then the creation of the Department of Homeland of Security as part of the largest U.S. government reorganization in the past 50 years." - from the inner front jacket flap. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Richard Irwin is a former Senior Special Operations Program Officer with the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). His 28 years of service with the CIA has provided Mr. Irwin with extensive operational and senior management expertise including several tours in Central American and European posts dealing with foreign governments. His skills in this arena were further honed through his work with US federal, state and local law enforcement departments and agencies. These include the Department of State, Department of Defense, Department of Homeland Security, the Homeland Security Council and the National Security Council at the White House. After distinguishing himself in Afghanistan following the September 11, 2001 attacks, Mr. Irwin was assigned to the White House, at the direction of the Director of Central Intelligence, to serve as the Director of Incident Management in the Office of Homeland Security from February 2001 to February 2003. In March 2003, Mr. Irwin was elevated to the position of Director of Incident Management for the Homeland Security Council at the White House, serving in this capacity through May 2004. At the request of Department of Homeland Security Secretary, Tom Ridge, Mr. Irwin was appointed Director of Incident Management for the Department of Homeland security in June 2004.His journey with the CIA has taken him to 87 countries, given him the opportunity to live overseas in several countries, and learn three languages. He served under eight Director's of Central Intelligence (DCI's) and President George W. Bush at the White House." - excerpt from the inner front and rear jacket flaps.…

Store description

Vero Beach Books is an antiquarian bookseller with a constantly updated inventory of rare out-of-print books, signed books, children's books, plus a large inventory of ephemeral items such as major U.S. city newspapers going back 100 years and more, golden and silver age fine condition comic books (soon to be added), and many other ephemeral items as well as much more recent popular volumes. We have been in business for 25 years, originally known as Emerson Books (named after one of our owner's favorite authors, to wit, Ralph Waldo Emerson) located back then in Westport, Connecticut. That said, we are here to serve you, to offer you fine quality items that are conservatively described so that you will always be pleasantly surprised and delighted with your purchase. Twenty-five years in the bookselling business has borne out our stellar service oriented reputation; the only difference is that now we are located in the almost always sunny and warm climate of Vero Beach, Florida. Again, we are here to serve you and, as was the case when we were previously known on ABEBooks.com as Emerson Books, we will continue to offer our very popular 100% free search service for those hard to find books rare and out of print books. Oftentimes we are also able to obtain these rare finds at very good discounts to our customers' so it is always worth contacting us in such cases!
