Hardback. Revised US Edn. (1st pub. 1975). SIGNED. Intro' by Colin Wilson. Regarded as a seminal work on the infamous Whitechapel murders of 1888. A former City of London policeman, the author meticulously examines the historical context, evidence, and myths surrounding Jack the Ripper. The book opens with a vivid portrayal of London’s impoverished East End, setting the stage for the brutal killings of five prostitutes, traditionally attributed to the Ripper. He details each victim’s life and murder, using Scotland Yard’s confidential files, including post-mortem 'photos and letters. He critically assesses theories, debunking myths like the Masonic conspiracy and dismissing suspects like M.J. Druitt due to lack of evidence. The final section explores possible suspects, from royalty to locals, concluding that the killer’s identity remains elusive. The author also connects the case to popular culture and later serial killers like the Düsseldorf and Yorkshire Rippers. Athough superseded by newer findings, the book remains a compelling, unsensationalised introduction to the case, praised for its thorough research and engaging style, making it a cornerstone for Ripperology enthusiasts.
