Head and shoulders black and white photograph portrait of Whitlam [1916-2014] in a pin stripe suit, taken circa 1977, and used as the cover photograph for his book "On Australia's Constitution". Inscribed in blue ink in Whitlam's hand, "Bill Wood Best wishes Gough Whitlam". With a compliments slip. Whitlam was the charismatic and controversial 21st Prime Minister of Australia from 1972 to 1975. His government implemented a large number of new programs and policy changes, including the termination of military conscription, institution of universal health care and free university education, and the implementation of legal aid programs. In 1975, a constitutional crisis was provoked by Governor-General Sir John Kerr, who controversially dismissed Whitlam and commissioned Opposition Leader Malcolm Fraser as Prime Minister.
