Third impression, INSCRIBED BY AUTHOR, WITH ALS LAID IN. 8vo, incl. b/w photographic frontis and plates. Original maroon cloth, spine and upper board stamped in gilt. Bevelled edges. Top edge gilt, leading and bottom edges untrimmed, a few uncut. Spine faded, extremities bruised, spine ends slightly frayed. Inscribed in blue-black ink to ffep: "For F. W. Tickner, with the kind regards of Caroline Ticknor, London, Set. 18, 1923, 15 Harris Ave, Jamaica Plain (Boston), Mass.", gently toned, front hinge tender and starting, occasional fox spots. Else, clean. Four-page ALS (Sept. 16th [1923]) to "Dear Dr Tickner" and signed, "Very sincerely yours, Caroline Ticknor," on blue-lettered American Women's Club-headed paper: single horizontal fold, gently creased. Good+ A rather charming family and literary history-related association copy of the third US impression of Boston biographer, editor and short-story writer Caroline Tichnor's biographical literary essays, inscribed to her near namesake and possible relation, the British school teacher and historian Dr Frederick Windham Tickner, with a warm and interested four-page ALS, on American Women's Club-headed paper, laid in: "I belong to the Ticknor family in Boston, and my grandfather founded the publishing house of Ticknor & Fields, which has been succeeded by Houghton Mifflin Co. [publisher of this book] of which firm my brother is now a member", she writes to Tickner, going on to discuss an American relation who spells their name with an 'E', and inviting him to her club before she sails home. They seemingly did meet as Tichnor dated and located her inscription to Tickner in this copy, "London, Sept. 18, 1923," as well as including her home address in Boston, presumably allowing for future correspondence. Of herself, she wrote: "I have published some half-dozen books myself, mostly memoirs, or biographical studies, and am greatly interested in meeting other writers, especially any bearing our family name." Tickner's most recent publication was Women in English Economic History, published in the year of their meeting (1923) by Dent. Glimpses of Authors includes chapters on 'Dickens in Boston,' 'Hawthorne and his Friend,' 'Henry James's "Bostonians"', 'Memories of the Coleridge Family,' Jane Austen's Grand-Niece,' and 'Anne Thackeray Ritchie.'.…
