A signed and personalized hardcover copy of The Gargoyle by Andrew Davidson, published by Random House Canada in 2008. The number line identifies this copy as a fourth printing. It retains the distinctive pictorial dust jacket with an intentional heart-shaped die-cut opening that reveals the fiery heart design beneath. | Davidson has inscribed the illustrated half-title page to Sheila and dated it February 12, 2009. The inscription includes a large original black-ink drawing built around the book?s heart motif, the message ?Enjoy your travels, and all the best,? and the author?s signature. This elaborate personalized presentation makes the copy especially appealing to collectors of signed Canadian fiction. | Davidson?s bestselling debut is a gothic story of love, suffering, faith, and redemption. After a devastating car crash leaves its unnamed narrator severely burned, the mysterious sculptor Marianne Engel enters his hospital room and claims that they were lovers in medieval Germany. Her tales of their shared past gradually draw him away from despair and into an extraordinary story spanning centuries. The novel was selected as a Richard and Judy Best Read 2009 title and was among the works nominated for the 2010 International IMPAC Dublin Literary Award. | The seller grades the book Very Good. Light shelf and edge wear is visible on the dust jacket, particularly around the spine ends and corners. The heart-shaped jacket opening is part of the original design and is not damage. The photographed inscription and copyright pages appear clean and legible. Please review all photographs carefully, as they form part of the description. …

On a burn ward, a man lies between living and dying, so disfigured that no one from his past life would even recognize him. His only comfort comes from imagining various inventive ways to end his misery. Then a woman named Marianne Engel walks into his hospital room, a wild-haired, schizophrenic sculptress on the lam from the psych ward upstairs, who insists that she knows him that she has known him, in fact, for seven hundred years. She remembers vividly when they met, in another hospital ward at a convent in medieval Germany, when she was a nun and he was a wounded mercenary left to die. If he has forgotten this, he is not to worry: she will prove it to him.
And so Marianne Engel begins to tell him their story, carving away his disbelief and slowly drawing him into the orbit and power of a word he'd never uttered: love.
