Forging His Own Chains: The Wonderful Life Story of George Bidwell Author: George Bidwell Publisher: The Bidwell Publishing Company, Hartford Year: 1891 Edition: Early illustrated edition Description Scarce 1891 illustrated edition of George Bidwell’s remarkable autobiography, recounting his notorious involvement in the famous Bank of England forgery case and his years of imprisonment in England. A fascinating 19th-century criminal memoir that remains sought after by collectors of true crime and historical Americana. Handsome half leather binding with floral boards and gilt lettering, all page edges gilt. Approximately 8.5 x 6 inches, 624 pages, illustrated. Name plate of the previous owner pasted inside the cover. A solid and attractive antique copy with good shelf presence. Light toning throughout as typical for the period. 2-inch crack to the inner front hinge, pencil note on the title page (likely a presentation or gift note). Small loss of leather at the head of the spine. Binding otherwise secure and the book remains complete and presentable. A collectible late-19th-century autobiography, increasingly desirable in leather bindings. …
