Xavier follows a roller-coaster ride of discovery and adventure as he learns how the accident has simultaneously created a genius and madness within him. He learns to control his mind during his recovery, and then gradually learns that his powers are far greater than normal, with heightened empathic and telepathic capacities. The backdrop is primarily Florida with sultry scenes in Palm Beach and Key West, but the action is fast and takes Xavier and his companions and antagonists all over the country. What sets this book apart is an unpredictable plot line and a believable accounting of why Xavier becomes mentally gifted and disturbed. Further, the story does not rely on the typical psychopathiic killer standard in this genre. The book is filled with passion, mind-expanding creativity and the kind of pace that will keep your attention." - from the inner front jacket flap "Dr. Dean intermingles known medical and scientific facts with a fascinating theoretical jump beyond." - James C. Ballenger, M.D., Director, Institute of Psychiatry, MUSC "The unpredictable plot will keep you reading." - Florida TODAY "As a person who has experienced much of the ups and downs of Xavier's life first hand, I can recommend this book." - Dannion Howell Brinkley, Author of "Saved by the Light" ABOUT THE AUTHOR: "Ray Dean, M.D. is a psychiatrist from Florida. He has been creative throughout his life, with talent as a pianist, composer, sculptor, cartoonist, and poet. His choice of what type of fiction he likes to write is a natural outgrowth of the unusual and complex life he has already led. Dean has distinguished himself in his career as a psychiatrist, having been medical director of a psychiatric hospital for several years. He has become recognized as an expert in the psychological problems of young adults, and gives frequent seminars and speeches on the subject. The author brings a unique combination of diverse creativity and psychiatric knowledge and experience to craft novels detailing exotic mental struggles. Above all, he wants readers to be entertained, but at the same time insists on keeping a story line which is within arm's reach of plausibility and credibility. Toward the Flame represents the culmination of bits and pieces of his own personality, fragments of the psychopathology of many of his patients, elements of cult-like philosophy, and a framework of understanding of the latest in research on the workings of the brain." - from the rear cover and inside rear jacket flap.
