Add to basketPoems by Mary Webb, with wood engravings by Joan Hassell. This has been rebound in a designer binder by award winning bookbinder, Yuko Matsuno and won the J.Hewit & Sons Ltd prize in the Designer Bookbinders Annual UK 2018 Bookbinding Competition. Bound in light brown goatskin with multi-coloured goatskin onlays. Link stitch with secondary sewing. Full linen board attachment. Hand ink-drawn doublures and endpapers with Gampi paper onlays. Goatskin rose flower decorations on the front cover. Goatskin rose petals fixed on the front and back boards with silk thread. Hand-sewn Japanese silk endbands. Multi-coloured scarf-jointed leather joints. Multi-coloured goatskin decorations on the squares. Full cloth-covered drop-back box in burgundy with circle-shaped window trimmed with goatskin. Green silk-covered linings. The drop-down box is also contained within a light teal cloth bag with goatskin covered buttons and a magnetic fastening. Book title blind-tooled on multi-coloured goatskin discs attached to bag. There is a certificate of authenticity signed by the bookbinder. Yuko Matsuno, who also won the 2016 Mansfield Medal for Best Book in the Competition for her binding of 'Through the Woods' by H.E. Bates, was inspired in this binding by both the Mary Webb poems describing roses and her poem 'The Dance', which reminded the binder of 'a vibrant world filled with lives and colours'. There is also a Mary Webb rose, bred by David Austin Roses, named after the poet, that has approximately 50 petals, thus linking the title of the book with inspiration for the binding.
