- The pictorial front panel of the dust wrapper for "Sacrifice", 7-1/2 inches high by 6 inches wide. Inscribed and signed to the left of the image "To Seymour Halpern / with my regards / Owen Johnson". The inscription is in black ink on a dark green background, but is legible. The panel is lightly rubbed & there is a small piece out at top left, affecting 1 letter of the title. 2 heavy creases where the panel has been folded for mailing have been reinforced with linen document tape on the verso. Good. The dark green dust wrapper panel depicts the full-length figure of a woman in black, green & white. She apppears to be drawing into herself and is holding a long coat or cloak wrapped around her. Owen Johnson's "Sacrifice" [1929] is set in an age of easy divorce and is about Sabina Baring, a new type of woman of deep emotion, feeling and courage, who rebels against the standards of her day.American author Owen Johnson [1878-1952] is best known for creating the character Dink Stover. His Lawrenceville Stories, set in the well known prep school, were the basis for a 1987 PBS mini-series.The Queens, New York Republican Congressman Seymour Halpern (1913-1997) started his political career as a campaign aide to New York's powerful mayor Fiorella La Guardia and first served in New York's State Senate for 14 years before seeking a seat in the U.S. Congress. In Albany Halpern sponsored 279 bills that became law, including measures on schools, housing, civil rights, nutrition and mental health. A Liberal, he was something of an anomaly as the lone Republican representative from New York City, and generally garnered support from Labor Unions and endorsement from the Liberal Party. Yet he never even considered switching parties as he considered membership in the Republican Party a family tradition and commitment. While he found ample time for his private pursuits, including painting and collecting autographs, he took his legislative duties very seriously. Of these, he was proudest of his co-sponsorship of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and of the original 1965 Medicare legislation. Seller Inventory # 34365
