Second Edition. Copy of Philipp Lenard, the 1905 Nobel Laureate in Physics, with his signature on the title page, dated 1931. There is a second inscription on the title page in another hand that is difficult to read, but the name Lenard is legible; this is probably a presentation inscription from Schaefer (it is dated 1922, the year of publication, but not signed by Schaefer). Frontispiece, vi, 174 pp; 33 figs. Original printed wrappers. Very Good. Sammlung Mathematisch-Physikalischer Lehrbücher 3. Lenard (1862-1947) won the Nobel Prize "for his work on cathode rays," but is probably better known for his staunch Nazism. "Although [Lenard] was given many honours . . . he believed that he was disregarded and this probably explains why he attacked other physicists in many countries. He became a convinced member of Hitler's National Socialist Party and maintained unreserved adherence to it" (biography at Nobel Foundation Web site). "In later years his reputation fell after he became a supporter of Hitler's Nazis and attacked Einstein's 'Jewish' physics" (biography at American Institute of Physics Web site).
