[LGBTQ] [Female Impersonator] Early Female Impersonators including Drag Queens and other performers paved the way for the mainstream accepting new forms of identity and gender-based culture. This archive contains 18 images of early female impersonators and Drag Queens from the 1940s-1990s. Photos feature various female impersonators from a range of years. Some are promo photos, others advertisements, and some are silver gelatin photographs. Six of them were signed by the Female Impersonator in the photograph. All measure about 8" x 10" and two smaller photographs at 5" x 7". One is in color, all others are black and white. Some photographs feature elaborate costumes including feathered dresses, jewelry, sequined dresses and dance-inspired costumes. Also included are photos from the LGBTQ films Sylvia, in which there is a transvestite character, and All American Co-Ed, a 1941 feature film starring female impersonators and characters in drag. Signed photos include of Scarlett Fever, with the note "Wayne - Thanks for a wonderful time all my love, Scarlett Fever, xoxo". Another reads: "To Paul Best Wishes, Adrian Ames." Other female impersonators included in this archive are: Jean Guilda, Hurricane Summers, Ricky Renee, Vicki Lynn, Charles Pierce, and Lady Bunny. All photos offer a glimpse into early transgender identity and Drag Queen performance, and offer a unique view into early LGBTQ culture.
