George Keithley's classic account of the Donner tragedy is a major event in American letters. It's an unforgettable tale of heroism, sacrifice, and desperation, all the more memorable for being cast in measured lines that land like successive blows of a hammer. --X.J. Kennedy
As the ancients well knew, verse is the most economical means of telling a story, and George Keithley has a ripping good story to tell. He reveals as much about 'national character' as he does his cast of individuals, all sharply drawn and indelible. "The Donner Party" is a story of shame, judgment, and endurance 'in the land of our desire.' It is a magnificent book. --David Mason
