About this Item
28 x 33 cm vellum sheet. One vertical and three horizontal folds. Revenue stamp and embossed seal at top left. Sir John Barrow (1764-1848) was British Secretary of the Admiralty from 1807 to 1845. His championship of polar voyages led to Britain becoming the leading Arctic explorer in the first half of the 19th century. Barrow supported explorers such as John Ross, William Edward Parry, James Clark Ross, and John Franklin. In 1830, he became of one of the co-founders of the Royal Geographical Society. He wrote "Voyages of Discovery and Research in the Arctic Regions" and became the namesake of Barrow, Alaska as well as Cape Barrow in the Antarctic. This document, which confirms the appointment of James Michael Boxer to serve as lieutenant on the H.M.S. "Royal William," is also signed by Gilbert Elliot, second Earl of Minto (1782-1859) and British statesman and admiral Sir Charles Adam (1780-1853). Adam was at one time captain of the royal yacht "Prince Regent" and governor of London's Greenwich Hospital. The sailing ship Royal William was launched April 2, 1833 at Pembroke Dockyard with 120 guns. In 1885 the ship was renamed Clarence and was loaned to the Liverpool Roman Catholic Reformatory Society to replace a ship deliberately burned by its inmates in 1884. The ship burned by accident in 1899. Seller Inventory # 134059
