There are many books on computers, software, and programming available. But most books in this area concentrate on one type of computer, usually ordinary digital computers such as PCs or large mainframe computers. However, the types of operations that can be carried out by computation machinery, and the ways that they can be implemented, are quite varied, as are their applications. This book instead seeks to give the reader a bird’s eye view of the entire computing landscape. It is directed to those who want such a broad perspective on computers and computing, with coverage of the following major topics: • What kinds of computers are there? • What are basic operation principles for each type of computer? • What tasks can be done efficiently with each type of computer? • Which computers are best suited for various tasks? • What are the problems and disadvantages of each type of computer? • What are the practical as well as theoretical limits to computers and calculation? The book is not intended as a textbook on cutting-edge technologies in any area; rather, it is an introduction from which readers should be able to pursue more in-depth studies. Readers are assumed to be familiar with computers and programming at some basic level. Since computers are ubiquitous nowadays, most readers will have this knowledge. The book does not seek to make readers into computer engineers, or to replace standard electrical engineering textbooks.
