Spine with raised bands and ruling in blind, in five compartments; lettered in gilt; device compartments with laurel decoration in gilt. Boards with lightest rubbing, shelfwear; corners rubbed. Top-edge gilt; fore-edge and bottom-edge roughcut. Printed on Roycroft's sumptuous paper. Limited to 1000 sets, numbered and signed. This set is numbered 390 and signed by Hubbard (or one of his Roycroft underlings, as was custom) on the limitation page. This set includes a striking piece of related ephemera: "Original Manuscript of Elbert Hubbard" folding dossier containing five (5) leaves in Hubbard's hand, laid-in at the front of Vol.I. Internally, each volume is bright and clean. Red ribbon marker. Each volume illustrated with frontispiece, monochrome portrait plates, and monochrome illustrative plates with protective tissue guards. Vol.I also includes two "plates" of mounted manuscript pages in Hubbard's hand in the section on Jonathan Swift: [1] "I believe," means I do not know and have ceased trying."; [2] "If you are without hope you are without fear." Textblock with in-text adornments in brown; decorative majuscule initials. A truly wonderful set. A substantial set which will definitely require additional shipping due to size and weight.
