Netherlands, after 1702. Fine oblong etching. City gate in the shape of a triumphal arch of the Tuscan order, crowned with a pediment below which is a crowned escutcheon. On either side of the triumphal arch are three obelisks on tall pedestals and crowned with balls. In the background are trees and palace façades. In the foreground pedestrians, equestrians and a coach. Signed in the plate in lower left corner "D. Marot fecit avec Previllege H." 19,7 x 28,5 cm.*Fuhring No. 4375. Bérard 20, 3. Inventez et Gravez par Daniel Marot Architecte du feu Roy Guilliaume III.me fait avec Privilege des Estats Generaux, et de Hollande et West-Frise". First state before number, etched and published by Daniel Marot (Paris 1663-Amsterdam 1752), French baroque architect, ornament designer and engraver. He left France after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685. In Holland he became the architect of King-Stadtholder Prince Willem III of Oranje (1650-1702), whom he followed to London.
