An early example of the consequences of refusing to name a source; in this case, a junior officer of the First Regiment of Foot Guards punished for refusing to reveal the name of another party to a private conversation to his senior officer, his struggle to clear his name by requesting a court martial on himself, the refusal of that request, and the junior officer's resignation of his commission. But there was a silver lining: Nugent (the junior officer) resigned his commission in December of of 1775 just prior to the Foot Guards being sent to fight in the American revolution. With an interesting reference to a Native American custom: " I accordingly waited on Lord Barrington and related to him my story; I confessed my ignorance in these affairs, and begged that he would be so obliging as to direct me in the proper mode of application for a court-martial on myself: his lordship replied, that he would borrow a custom form the North American Indians, who never gave an immediate answer to an thing of consequence; and in the mean time, that he might more clearly understand the matter, desired me to state my case in writing."
