Add to basketWith an Introduction by Salec Minc. Pp. [8], plus 44 plates hand-tipped onto stiff black art paper, each plate accompanied by a caption and brief text (mostly unattributed verse, perhaps also by Jones, usually also on hand-tipped sheets); impl. 4to; white art. leather, upper board lettered and ruled in gilt, slightly soiled; a little faint browning of plate edges, a couple of the caption sheets slightly creased at corners; Alpha Print Pty. Ltd., Perth, 1964. Edition limited to 75 copies signed by the artist. *Loosely inserted are two letters and a signed original of one of the plates, Winged Victory, (slightly soiled and lightly creased from folding, with a short split to the fore-edge and piece torn from bottom left corner, not affecting the image). The first letter is an unsigned typescript from Percy I. White to a Mr. Breckler, dated 15th January, 1964, commending the work of Brian Jones and alluding to the gift (from Breckler or Jones?) of the original drawing of Winged Victory. The second (holograph) letter is from Jones to Mrs. Breckler, dated 4th Feb. 1964, signed 'Brian'. In it, he refers to his hopes for the publication of his work and mentions encouragement received from Perth academic Professor Walter Murdoch and from Mrs. Breckler (who was presumably a member of the prominent Western Australian business family of that name). Information about the artist is scarce, but he could perhaps be the Brian Jones listed (very briefly) by the Centre for Australian Art, Australian Prints & Printmaking as born in Perth in 1948. Lithuanian born painter Percy White studied and exhibited in Europe (with the then unknown sculptor Jacob Epstein) before emigrating to Australia in 1926. On his death in 1967, he was described as 'the dean of Jewish artists in Australia'. Salec Minc (1905-1983) was a Russian born doctor, art patron and collector who emigrated to Perth in 1939. He was an early president of the Art Gallery Society of Western Australia and a vice-president of the International Association of Art Critics, Australian division. He was well known for his encouragement of young artists.
