Very light wear, small stamp on rear endpapers, and partial bookseller's small label in Vol. 1. Volume One has a frontispiece portrait of King Albert of the Belgians; Volume Two has a frontispiece portrait of Brand Whitlock, United States Minister to Belgium. Each volume has an inscription to Elizabeth L. Brainerd from the author. Brainerd was the author's mother-in-law - twice. Whitlock first married Susan Brainerd in 1892, but she died four months after they married. In 1895 he married again, this time to Nell Brainerd, sister of Susan. These two volumes relate the author's experiences as U.S. minister to Belgium during World War I, as well as diplomatic duties to seven other countries during wartime. Previous to his international duties, Whitlock was active in politics and, as assistant to Illinois Governor Altgeld, prepared the pardon documents for the Haymarket Affair's convicted men; later he was elected as Toledo's mayor for four terms. He was also a newspaperman, and author. Laid in is an envelope (empty) addressed to Elizabeth L. Brainerd from " the Legation of the United States of America / Havre." with Whitlock's name stamp on the rear flap. This heavy set may require additional shipping charges. 3rd printings092508A.
