About this Item

Son of the American stage star Edward Askew Sothern, junior was a standard in many a Broadway romance and adventure production from the 1880s on; he married Julia Marlowe and starred with her in Shakespearian dramas. AQS, heavy stock 3�" X 2" card (tipped to slightly larger brown autograph album leaf), n.p., n.y. Near fine. In his usual hurried scrawl that makes the text of this quotation unfortunately illegible, Sothern pens two brief lines (perhaps "What a [-] [-] / love is & etc / Highest Buddha" -- or perhaps not!) in a rich brown ink, signing "Yrs EH Sothern" as usual. Despite the improbability of an accurate transcription, an interesting, attractive piece.
