Item description from seller

British scholar and editor, husband of the novelist Mary Augusta Ward (Mrs. Humphrey). Two page letter presumably to Arnold Whitridge, dated Dec. 3 in ink, but with no year. On Ward's printed stationery with his address. In the letter, he indicates that he would recommend "Arnold" to "join the Atheneum." He warns him about the ballot process, and how long it might take to be elected. Refers to himself at an advanced age, so probably written towards the end of his life. Suggests that he find another friend, "not too old.in the world of letters" to recommend him. And lastly, he list information he knows about him. Letter was from the collection of the late George Nettleton, a professor at Yale. Sheet is slightly browned, but in nice condition. Date is estimate only.
