Item description from seller

Two folded leaves, 7 x 5.5", 7 pp, on Columbia University letterhead, written to "My dear Mr. Tyler", and signed "J.E. Kwegyir Aggrey", together with his New York address. A letter by James Emman Kewgyir Aggrey (1875-1927), a leading Ghanian Pan-Africanist, missionary, and educator known as the "Father of African Education." In 1898, Aggrey settled in the United States and attended Livingstone College in North Carolina. He remained in North Carolina until 1915, when he enrolled at Columbia University. He spent 1920 and 1921 touring Africa, before returning to Columbia in 1922-23 to earn his doctorate. During this time, he penned this letter, to a friend in Columbus, Ohio, regarding his recent speaking tour of that state. In the letter, Aggrey expresses his warm feelings for his friend, and his gratitude for the latter's hospitality ("It is men like you and the major that inspire me to talk for my people whenever and wherever I get up.). He also provides a detailed account of his trip, in which he gave rousing talks and inspired Southerners to commit themselves to supporting the Black race: "Your conversations with me had been of especial inspiration to me, and under that inspiration I spoke. I suppose they have told you I want you to pray for me that I may always tarry humbly at the foot of the cross and continue to receive my favor from him.The New York Age, The Chicago Defender, and The Star of Zion.would like to have an article concerning my visit to Columbus, O., and the services I rendered to the race.I would like the incident of the challenge that brought the southerns to his feet and to whistle, and then afterwards to bring him a native of Mobile, Ala, with deepest emotion to grasp my hand and to promise to spend his energies of his life to see that my race gets full justice, also the others from Kentucky." "Had a fine time. Spoke to the four or five hundred students at the chapel exercise in the morning. The enthusiasm was very high. Then I immediately went to a class and lectured on International Law.They wanted to give to give me a luncheon there but the Business men wanted me at the Y at 12:15, and I never go back on the people, so Rev. Hursh and Rev. Burtner motored me to the city. The pastor who heard me.asked me at the end of my last lecture if I knew how many years I had lived in my personal life time; He thought I had lived over three thousand years and more." We locate no Aggrey letters ever having appeared at auction, and no actual letters of his among a collection of Aggrey-related material at Columbia. Damp staining to letter with some ink bleed and soiling along centerfold, tiny separations along one fold, staining and soiling to rear blank, however letter is legible throughout. …
