("Stephen Vincent Benet") New York, 220 East 69th Street letterhead, n.d. to Mr. Oliver. 4 pages (2 two sheets). 6 3/4" x 5 1/2". A long good letter to a writer asking Benet if he was influenced by his English Department and other authors, etc. in his writing career. Very good. Benet died at age 44 of a heart attack. His letters are uncommon. In part: " - I think the colleges - or the ones I know - are probably doing as much about writing as they can. You cannot force writers like early peas - writing is about life. And all life can't be in a college - " Stephen Vincent Benet (1898-1943), born July 22, 1898, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania; died March 13, 1943; American author, poet, short story writer and novelist. Benet is best known for his book-length narrative poem of the American Civil War, John Brown's Body (1928), for which he won a Pulitzer Prize in 1929, and for two short stories "The Devil and Daniel Webster" and "By the Waters of Babylon".
