Item description from seller

Association Copy. SIGNED BY THE DUKE OF WELLINGTON. Carmichael-Smyth, Major General Sir James. PRECIS OF THE WARS IN CANADA, FROM 1755 TO THE TREATY OF GHENT IN 1814. WITH MILITARY AND POLITICAL REFLECTIONS. London, 1826. Tall 8vo. [2pp, confidentiality leaf & printer’s notice] + xiv + 185pp + [1pp, London: Printed by C. Roworth, Bell Yard, Temple Bar]. The confidentiality leaf states: “N.B. -- This Volume is printed by Desire of His Grace the MASTER GENERAL, for the use and convenience of Official People only. It is requested it may be considered as confidential by those Persons to whom Copies may be sent.” Inscribed, “Presented by the Author to Lt. Colonel Arnold Oct. 1826”. Signed “Wellington” below the printed notice. Original boards, backstrip restored retaining most of the paper label. A clean untrimmed copy, near fine. Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington, helped defeat Napoleon and became Prime Minister in 1828. The inscription made out to “Lt. Colonel Arnold,” is in all likelihood James Roberson Arnold, the second son of British General Benedict Arnold. James Robertson Arnold joined the Royal Engineers as a Second Lieutenant in March 1798, becoming First Lieutenant in June 1800, and Captain in 1805. His distinguished war services are described in Hart’s Army List for 1854, which states in part that he served as A.D.C. to the “sovereign” [George IV ?; William IV, and Queen Victoria] from 1830 until 1841, and became Colonel in the Royal Engineers in January 1837. Colonel Arnold, during the mission to Canada, worked with Carmichael-Smyth in proposing improvements to the fortifications that resulted in the building of the Citadel at Halifax. This rare confidential work--for official circulation only--was first published in 1826 (and later reprinted in 1862). Carmichael-Smyth's official report to the Duke of Wellington, who was then Master-General of the Board of Ordnance, covers the campaigns against Quebec by Generals Benedict Arnold and Richard Montgomery in 1775, Burgoyne's campaign in 1777, and the military and political operations of the War of 1812. When Great Britain and the United States signed the Treaty of Ghent to end the War of 1812, few people on either side of the Atlantic believed that peace would endure. With the threat of another Anglo-American war, the Duke of Wellington sent a commission of Royal Engineers to Canada in 1825 to evaluate defense structures. Led by Sir James Carmichael Smyth, the entourage explored Upper and Lower Canada, thereafter reporting to Wellington on necessary improvements to the defense of British North America. The 1825 inspection and subsequent plans included expanding fortifications to existing defenses to prevent the potential US seizure of Canada, which focussed on the waterways from the St. Lawrence River to Halifax. All of which marked the beginning of a massive, long-term defensive scheme laid out by Wellington in 1826 which included improvements to the Lachine and Rideau canals, and the Citadel at Halifax.
