Add to basketIn French. This will be, to say the least, an interesting offering. One of those I'm hesitant to make. The book, a monograph titled 'Arthur Kolnik' by the art historian Maximilian Gauthier, is quite rare. It was an edition limited to 500 copies. This copy is signed and inscribed by the artist. The inscription is to a Cora Ginsburg. You can read about her later in this listing. The signed inscription is on the half-title page. It reads 'À Madame Cora Ginsburg en témoignage de mon amitié, Kolnik, Paris 1967.' Inside of the book when I purchased it was a separate five page catalogue from the Foyle Art Gallery at 121 Charing Cross Rd. (not far from 84) London, titled 'Arthur Kolnik: An Exhibition of Woodcuts, February 6th to March 3rd, 1937.' No other copy of this catalogue is for sale on the Internet. On the blank back cover is written, presumably by Ms. Ginsburg who was born around 1911, 'Wm. De Kooning, 156 W.22.' I looked that up. It was his second apartment in New York City, a loft and studio that de Kooning moved into in 1936. By 1946 the rent ($35.00) had become too steep and he was evicted. Cora Ginsburg, lived in Tarrytown, N.Y. I purchased this book from another Tarrytown resident, a Charney V. Bromberg who was the grandson of the famed labor leader and manager of the Jewish Daily Forward, Baruch Charney Vladeck (born Baruch Nachman Charney). Vladeck died at the age of 52. His funeral procession through the Lower East Side and ending outside the Forward building drew 500,000 mourners (not a typo). Among the speakers at the service were Governor Herbert Lehman, Mayor Fiorello La Guardia, Senator Robert F. Wagner and Socialist leader Norman Thomas. I may have gone a little bit afield of the book with that information. Six degrees of separation et al. You can see the covers in the photos provided. They have a little bit of wear, small creases on the spine, and a few larger ones on the rear. The interior of the book is in very good condition. There is a little bit of strain on the binding between the blank verso of the half-title page and the title page, but there are no cracks or spaces there or anywhere in the book. A bit of tightness at the middle of the gutters between the pages has created a little bit of creasing to their left and right. The pages are quite clean. I saw a total of seven very small and inconspicuous spots in the text, all located on the white margins away from the print and illustrations. There is a light toning at the margins of the pages. There are no markings or attachments in the book. And with the exception of the artist's signed inscription no one has written their name or anything else anywhere in the book. The catalogue has two very tiny edge tears and a red penciled framing square around the 24 named woodcuts. 'Arthur Kolnik' is 54 pages long, 49 are numbered. It contains 21 Peintures (4 in Color) and 5 Gravures. They are all in excellent condition. 'Arthur Kolnik was a Galician-Jewish illustrator and painter. His paintings and expressionist woodcuts depict the figures and images of Eastern European Jewry, the world of shtetl erased by the Holocaust.' You can read more about him by reading his Wikipedia profile. 'Cora Ginsburg was a prominent dealer in antique fabrics and clothing. She helped develop the field of costume in the worlds of antiques and museums. Her customers included the Metropolitan Museum of Art and notable collectors like Henry du Pont, John D. Rockefeller Jr., Electra Havemeyer Webb and Ima Hogg, who made purchases for themselves and for museums.' The 'Cora Ginsburg Gallery' continues to thrive 15 years after her passing. It is located at 19 E 74th St in New York.
