Size: 439x283mm, printed in red, black & purple on a white background with purple drape to the side, signed (printed signature) BENSON in the fold of the drape [Martin Benson, English Character Actor], creased where folded, nicked to one margin not affecting text, otherwise a good example of an ephemeral item printed on poor paper and therefore a rather remarkable survival in attractive order, "The objective is a number of completely self-contained theatre groups in 16 Area. All Services, Allied Troops, Women's Services and interested civilians are welcome. There is boundless amusement for you ……" The actor Martin Benson, (1918-2010 - see Wikipedia for a full account of his interesting life) was born into a Jewish family in London - he seemed briefly destined to become a pharmacist. As a gunner in the army during the second world war, he organised entertainment for the troops, and produced a tour of Gaslight in aid of a fund to replace HMS Dorsetshire. By 1944, he had been promoted to captain and was posted to Alexandria, Egypt, where he built a theatre from scratch, assisted by his sergeant-major, another aspiring actor - Arthur Lowe.
