An archive of Alex R Wiener art and poetry from the 1960s is a stunning example of art that many would describe as outsider, naive, or psychedelic, includes 10 drawings, and a book of poems with a hand made collage on front and rear cover; and 10 pages of typed poetry, as well as other items described below (email me for complete list and photos). Alex Weiner, born in 1940, and part of the late 1950s and early 1960s Lower East Side NYC arts scene, produced a lot of pen and ink drawings he frequently gave away to friends, and often read his poetry in coffee houses. In 1967 he moved to Newark NJ, became a registered art therapist, and started to work on The Journal of Skylore Engine, a trippy, surrealistic poem published by Golden Apple Studios of New Jersey in 1972, and reprinted by Mount Prospect Press in 1992; a work that has generated a cult following. His poetry often mentions mescaline, which Mr Wiener suggested to me was one of the forces active in his creative production during the 1960s. The archive contains: 10 drawings, mostly on 8 « x 11 paper, many in blue ball point pen; described below. AND a book of poems and drawings in a three hole grommet bound notebook with an intricate text and image collage on the front and rear cover encased within plastic sheets; the poem is 14 pages, type-written and hand corrected on 1 side only with two blue and black ball point pen and ink drawings; one with tape at edges, titled To Kill Something Tear on Dotted Line . This was probably created c.1962 from dates on the newspaper collages. AND Ten pages of type-written poetry held together by a paper clip, nd, the poem begins, To Wyethesque Cassandra . The 10 drawings are described below: 1) Horizontal blue ink drawing of alien like creatures overlapping heads and green eye, signed at bottom : 2) Vertical blue ink drawing of alien like creatures overlapping heads and green eyes, signed at bottom; 3) Vertical drawing of fetus-like baby and orbs in yellow, red and blue inks; 4) Giving Direction to the Void signed at bottom and dated 1965; 5) Everything is a Christian Lion in the Coliseum of its Paradox 6) Vertical black ink drawing of two figures with op art collaged paper disc eyes, signed at bottom and dated 1965; 7) The Poet s Pride of Intuitive Lines signed at bottom, dated 1965, 2-inch tear to top edge; 8) Horizontal blue ink drawing of two creatures facing each other with patterns between; on rear is written Fourteen right hands planted in his mouth ; 9) Horizontal pencil drawing of a dog-like animal with a large head, dated on rear 6/15/66; 10) Circular blue and red ink drawing of a face 11) A vintage photocopy? of the drawing To Kill Something Tear on Dotted Line in poetry book. Archive also includes a 1992 reprint of Skylore with a signed inscription.
