- Over 65 words penned in blue ink on 6-1/2 inch high by 5 inch wide creamy white paper. A poem titled by Friswell "Translated from Beranger", the opening lines of which read "Old age steals on, dear Mistress mine, / Soon shall I leave you all alone." Friswell, who has translated the poem, closes with "From Poems by the Author of 'The Gentle Life'", signed "J. Hain Friswell". Dated "Feb.y XXIV - 1869" by the author with his date of death penned in another hand below. Once folded, the letter has been mounted from the verso onto heavier stock with some creases resulting from the glue. The corners are clipped and there is some light wear to the verso of the mounting sheet which was likely removed from an album. Good. Beranger's "Song in Prospect of Death", translated by Friswell was published on page 110 of the "Irish Literary Gazette" on Saturday September 12, 1857.The English essayist and novelist James Hain Friswell (1825-1878) was a frequent contributor to numerous journals and periodicals. He first met with success in 1854 for his works "Houses with the Fronts Off" and "Twelve Inside and One Out". He wrote his best known work "The Gentle Life" in 1864. Then, very popular, over 20 editions of the work were published including an edition dedicated to the Queen. Seller Inventory # 96438
