A "Bill of Sale", so titled as a heading, by which Hartman Vreeland transfers ownership of the sloop "Locomotive" to Samuel F. Tracy, a New York City merchant. "Know all men by these present, that I, Hartman Vreeland, of the County of Hudson, State of New Jersey, Landsman, for and in consideration of the sum of one hundred and fifty Dollars, to me in hand paid by Samuel F. Tracy, of the City, County, & State of New York. Sell and deliver unto the said Samuel F. Tracy, the Sloop named the Locomotive of Bergen, together with all the Sails, Rigging, Anchors, and appertances [sic], there unto belonging, to have and to hold the said Sloop, with all her tackle unto the said Samuel F. Tracy." Signed "Hartman Vreeland" at bottom right with the remnants of a red seal lightly covered by tissue paper. it is witnessed and signed by A. E. Osborn. The document is docketed on the verso "Hartman Vreeland / Bill of Sale / Sloop 'Locomotive' / 31 May 1850" and also "Bill of Sale / Hartman Vreeland / to / Samuel F. Tracy". Folded several times, horizontally and vertically, with short tears to the edges of the horizontal folds. The document is slightly soiled & darkened and the word "sails" is smudged. Good. Purchased by the New York City merchant Samuel F. Tracy, the sloop "Locomotive" sank in the Hudson River opposite Saugerties, New York on August 5th, 1887. Though the ship sank to a depth of 43 feet, its mast and boom where nonetheless above water and posed a risk to navigation. Considered to endanger navigation, the Chief of Engineers ordered it be removed by hired labor on October 28th of that year at a cost of $317.94.
