About this Item
William Christopher Handy (1873-1958) was an African-American musician, composer, and band leader. He was a major force in popularizing blues music in the first decades of the 20th century. He had a number of big hits, including "Memphis Blues" and "St. Louis Blues." We offer here a biographical essay reproduced from The Victorian, July, 1942, titled "Music's 'Handy' Man." It is boldly signed by Handy on the front, just above the blurb promoting his 1941 autobiography Father of the Blues. Printed on trifold paper, it measures 9" x 5 1/2" folded, 9" x 17" unfolded. The previous owner made several notes and marks, primarily in pencil and colored pencil; there is a very small tear to the lower right margin of the front page; there are two creases, one of which touches the 'd' in Handy's signature. Overall, very good. Seller Inventory # A00261
