10.75" x 14" photo album from 1938, which belonged to a military family while in Hawaii. From a couple of photos inscribed to Romeyn Hough, I believe that this album belonged to him and his family while living in Hawaii when he was stationed there in 1938. Hough is described in one photo as a Lieutenant Colonel, and a Google search reveals he died from a non-battle injury in 1942. One of the signed photos is from Violinist Pio Reyes and the other was from Lieutenant Barton K. Yount. A fascinating thing about this album is the Japanese featured here, pre-Pearl Harbor. There is a signed photo of Seishiro "Henry" Okazaki, who was a Japanese-Hawaiian healer, and martial artist who founded Danzan Ryu Jujitsu. Other photos show Japanese people practicing Kyudo, a Japanese martial art of archery. Other photos are of his children and family, and it appears that they took classes in martial arts. There are several aerial views of Hawaii, including the Manoa Valley and Manulani Heights with military back stamps from the 18th Air Base Photo Laboratory at Fort Shafter. Other snapshots and photos show women making leis, the Pali, the northeast coast of Maui, Kiluea, May-Lei Day, Japanese training ships, etc. There is also a photo of a children's orchestra at the Robert Lewis Stevenson School. Ephemera includes two sketches, five brochures/guides, two tickets to events at Schofield Barracks, a one-page program from the 1938 Lei Queen Coronation Pageant and commercial photo postcards from the Nakayama Grand Circus. There are over 220 images inside, including about 135 snapshots, 30 photo postcards, 20 regular postcards and about 35 larger professional photos. Also included is an envelope of negatives Photos are generally attached to the page by one side and there is onion-skin type of dividers between pages. A few photos are detached and several loose photos are in envelopes attached to pages. Some pages are annotated and there is writing on the verso of some of the photos as well. An interesting note about Hough is his father was Romeyn Beck Hough (1857-1924) an American physician and botanist best known for creating The American Woods, a 14-volume collection of wood samples from across North America.
