About this Item
Sir Henry Irving wrote this note on lined stationery from the Brevoort House in Manhattan in 1886. It is addressed to "Buck" -- a previous sales receipt included here names Chester Alan Arthur, Jr., son of the President, as the "Buck" in question. Irving wrote: "Tuesday next - shall we have our drive on that day? If that will suit I am yours Now & Ever H. Irving" He also sends "My love to John" ("My name is John Henry -- so my love to both.") The page of stationery measures approximately 8 1/2" x 5". Sir Henry Irving (1838-1905) was born John Henry Brodribb, and was a British stage actor and production manager in the 19th century. He and his Company played many seasons of Shakespeare at the Lyceum Theatre in London's West End. He was the first actor to be awarded a knighthood. There is some scattered soil and contemporary ink transfer; the slightly rough left edge indicates this was part of a pad or that the second blank page was removed. Generally very good.
