About this Item
Apparent First soft cover edition ( 'First published 1980' ). More importantly it is 1) the Only signed copy for sale on the Internet, 2) the Only signed copy of Any of the author's books for sale on the Internet, and 3) signed to J.T. Fraser whose bookplate is affixed on the front inside cover. The inscription, on the half-title page reads ' To J.T. with best wishes, Peter.' 'Peter Saunders is the Co-Director, Institute of Science in Society, London, and the Emeritus professor of Applied Mathematics, King's College London. He has been applying mathematics in biology for over 40 years, in microbiology and physiology as well as in development and evolution. He has been a critic of neo-Darwinism for almost as long. His major research interest is in the ways complex nonlinear systems differ from the simple linear systems on which most of our intuition is based. This leads, for example, to a straightforward explanation of punctuated equilibria.' An introduction to Catastrophe Theory has been described as an 'accessible account of the mathematics of catastrophe theory, showing also how it can be applied in novel ways to the study of complex systems.' Julius Thomas Frazer who made 'important scholarly contributions to the interdisciplinary Study of Time' and whose 'work has strongly influenced thinking about the nature of time across the disciplines from physics to sociology, biology to comparative religion, was a seminal figure in the general interdisciplinary study of temporality.' Dr. Fraser was also a founding member of the International Society for the Study of Time. You can read a lot more about him in his Wikipedia profile. I purchased a number of his books some years ago in Westport, Connecticut where he lived. The covers of this book are clean. There's a crease at the front bottom corner and the corner is curled up a little. There are a couple of other corner creases. The book is square The spine is straight. The pages and covers are nicely tight. The text pages are very clean (there is light spotting/foxing on the end papers and signed half-title page). There is some corner creasing, the consequence of the bumps that created the covers corner creases, nothing terrible. There are no markings. Dr. Fraser's bookplate is the only attachment. And the signed inscription is the only writing to be found in the book. Seller Inventory # 003758
