Add to basketRare autograph note handwritten by the 12th President of the United States. Duodecimo, one page on a folded sheet, blind stamped in the upper right corner. The note reads in full, "The President would be glad to see Mr. [Gales] this morning at 12 o'clock if in town, if not Mr. Seaton - Washington [?] May 12, 1850." In near fine condition with mail folds. Zachary Taylor was the 12th President of the United States, serving from 1849 until his death in 1850. A career military officer, Taylor gained fame as a hero in the Mexican-American War. His presidency was marked by tensions over slavery and the expansion of the United States, particularly regarding the status of territories gained from Mexico. Taylor was a member of the Whig Party and favored a compromise on slavery, but his sudden death from a stomach illness after just 16 months in office meant little to no progress was made on what was the most controversial issue in the nation at the time.
