Item description from seller

Typed letter signed by Winston S. Churchill to the newspaper proprietor and Liberal statesman Walter Layton, Lord Layton, framed with a photographic portrait of Churchill and a printed handbill of his “We Shall Not Flag or Fail” speech. One page, on Churchill’s Chartwell, Westerham, Kent letterhead, addressed to The Lord Layton, C.B.E. The letter reads in full, “December 22, 1948. My dear Walter, I should of course like to see Mr. Cummings, although he has written many hard and unfriendly things about me. I fear however I cannot undertake this addition of giving an interview to my labours at this particular time. I am working night and day to get my book affairs settled before I leave for Monte Carlo on the 28th. I am so sorry not to be able to meet your wishes, and I thank you for giving me this opportunity. Will you please explain to Mr. Cummings? I send you herewith a copy of a little book, with my Christmas greetings. Yours sincerely, Winston S. Churchill.” The Mr. Cummings of the letter is A.J. Cummings, the Liberal political editor of Layton’s News Chronicle. With a Post Office telegram visible through a window at the rear, addressed to Lord Layton at Marsham Court, that reads, “Thank you both so much for your kind birthday message = Winston.” Double matted and framed. In fine condition with old mailing folds, a hole punch to the upper left corner, and a small pale stain. The entire piece measures 23 inches by 22.5 inches. Walter Thomas Layton (1884-1966) was among the most influential economic journalists and Liberal figures of his generation. A Cambridge economist, he edited The Economist from 1922 to 1938 and, as chairman of the News Chronicle and The Star, presided over two of Britain’s leading Liberal newspapers. During the Second World War he served Churchill’s coalition government in the Ministry of Supply and the Ministry of Production, and he was raised to the peerage as Baron Layton in 1947. A.J. Cummings, the News Chronicle’s long-serving political editor, was one of the most widely read political columnists in Britain and a frequent critic of Churchill, which lends a wry candor to Churchill’s reply. At the time of this letter Churchill was Leader of the Opposition, having lost the general election of 1945, and was devoting himself to his six-volume history The Second World War, the first volume of which had appeared earlier in 1948. He spent the turn of the year in Monte Carlo, combining work on the memoirs with painting, the pastime that sustained him throughout his life. The famous lines on the accompanying handbill come from his speech to the House of Commons of June 4, 1940, delivered after the evacuation of Dunkirk.…
