1st printing of the first American hardcover in the Canadian export jacket and SIGNED by the late author on the title page with a blue ballpoint pen. LAID-IN is a bookmark produced for the Jane Goodall Institute in Ottawa which includes a quote from Jane Goodall, "Only when we understand/ can we care./ Only when we care/ will we help./ Only if we help/ shall they be saved," and a line drawing of one of Goodall's named Chimps - David Graybeard. Tan paper boards with grass green cloth binding and white endpapers. The corners of the boards are sharp. Foxing to the exposed page edges and the top edges of both boards but not to the text. Slight spine roll. The Canadian jacket produced by Thomas Allen replaced the Houghton-Mifflin original to include the statement that $1 of the purchase price would be donated to the Jane Goodall Institute of Canada. It is bright, crisp, price intact and bears the same ISBN as the book. Foxing is visible on the reverse side. There is a crescent-shaped crease in the top edge of the front panel, next to the spine edge. Canadian buyer will be charged GST. Seller Inventory # 002540
