Item description from seller

Inscribed by Lillian Hellman to Jack Warner, CEO of Warner Bros. Studios: "To Jack, with warm regards and hopes that it will be a good play for all of us, Lillian. March, 1942." A Near Fine copy in like dust jacket (supplied). Publisher's beige cloth stamped in red and black. A couple pinpoint ink stains to cloth and some toning to endpapers. Dust jacket with a slight crease to spine and a bit of rubbing to edges. Overall, an attractive example with an excellent inscription. Watch on the Rhine, the story of German anti-facists Kurt and Sarah Muller following their escape from Europe to the United States, had already enjoyed a successful Broadway run of over three hundred performances when Jack Warner purchased the rights in 1941. Hellman's lover, Dashiell Hammett, was hired to adapt the screenplay; Herman Shumlin, director of the stage production, reprised his role for the film adaptation; and Bette Davis and Paul Lukas starred as the Mullers. The film debuted in August of 1943 to major commercial and critical success. At the Academy Awards that year, Watch on the Rhine was nominated for Best Picture, and Paul Lukas won Best Actor for his role. Hammett's script was also nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay, though he was beat out by the screenwriters of Casablanca. Jack Warner (1892 - 1978) was the co-founder and CEO of Warner Bros. Studios. Jack and his brothers Sam, Albert, and Harry, who had already been in the film production business for nearly two decades, founded the studio in Culver City, California in the early 1920s. The early successes of the studio included The Jazz Singer (1927), the first feature-length "talkie," which represented a major technological advancement; and the films of stars like James Cagney, Bette Davis (including Watch on the Rhine), and Errol Flynn. Over the course of his five-decade career, Jack saw the production of classic Warner Bros. films including The Maltese Falcon (1941), Casablanca (1943), iconic Westerns like The Searchers (1956), and the Audrey Hepburn hit My Fair Lady (1964).
