Add to basket[African American] Milton Goell. The Wall that is My Skin. New York, 1945. First edition. Signed by author on front endpaper. Original cloth terra cotta boards with gilt lettering on front and spine. Approx. 5" x 8." Written by a Jewish lawyer and Democrat, this book-length poem assumes the perspective of a Black man in America. The narrator reflects upon slavery, God, racism, President Lincoln, and war. Included in this volume is a dedication to the memory of Franklin D. Roosevelt, "who loved the world, and the people in it, white, black, red, yellow, brown, of every race and creed." Contains a forward by African-American composer of spirituals, Hall Johnson. Johnson acknowledges that Goell was "born with a silver spoon in his mouth" but also speaks highly of his activism and dedication to the eradication of discriminatory practices in America. Book bears mild shelfwear but is otherwise in very good condition. Powerful artifact of racial solidarity during the 1940s in America.
