Jones arrived in Saigon, a new young lieutenant assigned to the Intelligence section of the Military Assistance Command, Vietnam (MACV). His job: Order of Battle analyst. From his desk in a windowless building he was to receive and analyze reports from the field on enemy capabilities, and, from his records and analysis, present these figures and their implications to his superiors. As Jones soon discovered, the first casualty of war is truth. As he worked at his desk, he realized that the information from captured VC documents and prisoners of war did not always square with the orders he received from above. And sometimes his orders required that he actually alter official reports~fudge the figures. Truth was taking strange turns in Vietnam: and it took the most bizarre twist of all when the Headquarters command refused to accept numerous forewarnings of a nationwide offensive to occur during the Tet holidays. Thus, Jones~an idealistic officer who went into the war willingly, with deep belief in the U.S. military~fought on another battleground~a growing disillusionment over his compromised usefulness and the corrosion of his own principles. But he continued to be a loyal soldier, obedient to the point of responding to wrongful orders while knowing that strong dissent would have been the more honorable course. Jones tells his story with candor and complete integrity. It is a story he did not forget with his release from the army. As a soldier, he had tried to remain obedient. As a civilian and patriot he could no longer remain silent. In the critical CBS Westmoreland trial he felt it his duty to produce the only physical pieces of evidence from inside the headquarters that would attest to the "conspiracy" theory. His affidavit and deposition raised the question of whether the misinformation and half~truths that he and his men supplied under orders to perpetuate the claims of a winnable war had contributed to, or even caused, what he considers the beginning of the end. In WAR WITHOUT WINDOWS he tells of his own part in the step~by~step operations of an Intelligence that slowly but relentlessly tore at the fabric of truth. He draws the reader into issues that were to scream their message throughout the land and become one of the vital controversies of our times. "A masterful work . Absorbing, revealing; should be read by all who want the full story of what contributed so much to the American defeat in Southeast Asia."~ Bill D. Ross. author of lwo Jima.…
