Copia. Der Plantage Twistrust, gelegen in de Colonie Surinaame. Op den Een- En- Dertigsten December Des Jaars Zeventien Honderd Negen- En-Tagtig, Compareerden voor my Dominicus Van Vianen, Notaris, by den Edelen Hove van Holland geadmitteerd, te Amsteldam resideerende: De Heer Dirk Luden, in Qualiteit als Directeur, en De Heeren Pieter Waakhuysen en Cornelis Hoorens Van Heyningen, in Qualiteit als Commissrissen van de Der Plantage Twistrust, gelegen in de Colonie Surinaame; woonende zy Heeren Comparanten binnen deeze Stad, en zynde aan my Notaris bekend. [dropped-head title] Small bifolium printed on the first three of 4 pages. Original debenture bond guaranteed by a coffee farm in Dutch Guiana. Number 73 of a total of 171 bonds issued in Twistrust, a coffee plantation of 315 Dutch acres on the right bank of the Guiana River. Known to the negro slave workers as Smetie , Matappicakreek in the colony of Surinam (Dutch Guyana) the plantation is also sometimes referred to as Landlust-en-Twistrust , Landlust being a neighbouring plantation to which it was later joined. The united plantation was 500 acres in extent and employed 52 negro slaves. The plantation belonged to the company Laurens Brandligt & Zoon until its direction was transferred on 21st July 1789 to the Sociëteit der Plantagie Twistrust. The bond is signed in manuscript by the notary, the Director, Dirk Luden, and the two named Commissioners. While the certificate does not mention the product, the identification as a coffee plantation is made in A.J. van der Aa, 'Historisch-Geografisch Woordenboek van Suriname', vol.14, pp138-40. See also page 278 of the thesis by J. P. van de Voort, 'De Westindische plantages van 1720 tot 1795: Financiën en handel', Eindhoven, 1973, where details of capitalization and return are given. The trade with Surinam was considered highly profitable especially for Amsterdam, but declined towards the end of the century. In excellent fresh condition. A rare survival of a West Indian commercial document, especially in this state of preservation. SEE ILLUSTRATION.…
