Before there was "Rodgers & Hammerstein", there was "Romberg & Hammerstein." Sigmund Romberg (1887-1951) was an Austro-Hungarian composer best known for his musicals and operettas. He was a key figure of American operetta during the early 20th century and developed a new model for operetta with Oscar Hammerstein II. The pair collaborated on two movies: 'Viennese Nights' (1930) and 'The Night is Young' (1934). Viennese Nights is an American all-talking, pre-code musical operetta filmed entirely in Technicolor and released by Warner Brothers, who yet holds the copyright. Filmed in the spring of 1930, the effect of the Great Depression limited the financial sucess in the U.S., although the film had long box office runs in Britain and Australia. For sale is the Score for Viennese Nights, bound in brown leather, with gold lettering & designs on spine and front stamped Sigmund Romberg, as if self-published. No Jacket nor presentation sleeve. On title page is an inscription to Jeane Judels from Sigmund Romberg. Most likely a special limited edition of one printing released in conjunction with the movie. Hardcover has brown leather boards with gilt lettering spine and front, but no DJ. Leather worn through at corners including foot of spinetorn on front. Top page-edge gilt. Rearcover shows sunning outline due to storage. Interior is tight, clean and unmarked, except for inscription by Author and Composer on title page. Copyright 1930. Made in U.S.A.
