A political novel in which an idealistic young newspaperman exposes graft and fights for political reform. Presentation copy with signed inscription by Raine to fellow writer Robert Ames Bennet on front free endpaper: "Robert Ames Bennet, / Best wishes / Wm. M. Raine / 1-4-14." Bennet (1870-1954) was a writer of popular fiction, including many Western stories, published in the pulps and in book form. Today he is perhaps best known for his novel THYRA: A ROMANCE OF THE POLAR PIT (1901), one of the better early lost race novels. A nice association copy. Smith, American Fiction, 1901-1925 R-30.
