About this Item
8vo. [4], v-xliii, [3], 3-323, [1] pp. Brown cloth with gold lettering blocked in brown on the spine. Illustrated with a few in-text and full-page diagrams and charts. Inscribed to Joe Elder by the author, inscription dated 1979, after what Moffatt refers to as the "fine Wisconsin Conference". With a typed letter to Joe Elder, signed by Michael Moffatt. The letter is on Rutgers Stationery, and closes with Moffatt asking Elder to excuse "the somewhat butchered Tamil". Moffatt was an Assistant Professor of Anthropology at Rutgers College, and Joe Elder was a Professor in the Department of Sociology and in the Department of Languages and Cultures of Asia. He is now Professor Emeritus. A nice association copy of Moffatt's study of the culture of India's caste system, and of the religious and cultural practices of those at the bottom of the caste system. Moffatt argues that when isolated from the other ranks of people in the caste system, "the untouchables" mimick the caste system among themselves. His book is based on fourteen months of observation in a few villages in Tamil Nadu. Foxing to the textblock. Seller Inventory # 000010355
