New York: Knopf, [printed at the Plimpton Press, Norwood, Mass.], 1936. 147 pages, plus one-page note by the book's designer, W.A. Dwiggins. Original publisher's orange cloth stamped in gilt; top edge gilt; original red ribbon marker intact. [23.5 cm.] A very good copy, lacking the dust jacket and slipcase. The spine is sun-faded; leaves are mildly toned throughout; endpapers are browned near the hinges. Partially unopened. FIRST EDITION, limited issue, being #93 of 333 copies SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR. A collection of six essays discussing various authors and their works. In her "Prefatory Note," Cather states that "The title . . . means that the book will have little interest for people under forty years of age. The world broke in two in 1922 or thereabouts, and the persons and prejudices recalled in these sketches slid back into yesterday's seven thousand years. . . . It is for the backward, and by one of their number, that these sketches were written." --p. v. Cather biographer, James L. Woodress, notes that Cather scholars have long been puzzled by this statement and that contemporary reviewers (who favorably received the book) roundly rejected the idea that younger generations would not appreciate the essays. He wrote: "Reviewer's of 'Not Under Forty' in general found the essays interesting and significant. Written with Cather's usual charm and polish, they reflected a remarkable sensibility and good judgment. As she seldom wrote criticism, it was a significant contribution to American letters to have these fugitive pieces gathered into a single volume." --"Willa Cather: a Literary Life," (pp. 335, 472-473). This limited edition was also issued in a binding variant of blue cloth; the priority is unknown, although we usually see the blue cloth on copies later in the numbering sequence.
